We are halfway through this challenge and I hope your platform and your ideas about what a platform is anyway are growing. By now you may be beginning to suspect that there is more to building a platform than just broadcasting about yourself out into the wilderness of the interwebs. It isn’t how many friends/followers you have but rather the connections you can make. Today’s challenge is…
Make a Friend.
It doesn’t matter if it is on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Google+ (you have an account on Google too now, right?) but you must make a connection with someone. It can be as easy as introducing yourself.
“Hi! I’m Sean. I noticed that you write genre fiction. I write genre fiction as well. We both have a common interest in British television and science fiction. Are you a fan of Red Dwarf or Dr. Who? I think we have a lot that we could talk about. I am sending you a friend request, I hope you will accept it.”
Don’t blast them with your blog URL or try to market yourself to them. Instead, act as if you are meeting someone at a cocktail party. Make clever small talk and ask them about themselves. More than likely they will reciprocate.
And then like Rick tells Louie…
This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
